Chimney Removal in Winnipeg
If your furnace and water heater both vent out the side of the house now, the chimney may not be doing anything except soaking up water. Taking it down below the roofline ends the upkeep, and it often costs about the same as one large repair.

Is Your Chimney Still Doing Anything?
Go down to the basement and look at the furnace and the water heater. If both have white or grey plastic pipes running out through the wall, the chimney probably isn't venting anything. If either one still has a metal pipe running into the chimney, it's in use, and it may need a liner rather than removal.
The other thing to think about is the fireplace. Taking the chimney down ends any chance of using a wood-burning fireplace, so make sure you're happy to lose it. A gas insert or an electric fireplace can usually go in its place later if you want the look.
We'll check all of this ourselves before quoting, so you're not relying on a guess from the basement stairs.

Two ways to do it
How Much of the Chimney Comes Out
Most people only need the part above the roof gone. Going further frees up space inside, at a higher cost.
Below the roofline
The chimney is taken down brick by brick to below the roof deck, and what's left in the attic is capped off. The roof opening is framed in, sheathed and shingled. Nothing changes inside the house.
$1,500 to $4,000
All the way down
The chimney comes out through the attic and every floor, down to the basement. It frees up the space it took in closets and walls, and it means patching floors, walls and ceilings afterwards.
$5,000 and up
Compare it with a rebuild, or see every ballpark in the cost guide.

Is it safe to remove a chimney?
Yes, as long as nothing is still venting into it. Before any brick comes down we'll check every appliance in the house to make sure the chimney is really out of service, because a gas appliance still connected to it would have nowhere to send its exhaust.
What happens to the hole in the roof?
Once the chimney is down below the roof, the opening is framed in, sheathed and shingled to match the roof around it. If your shingles are older and the colour won't match exactly, we'll tell you before we start.
Do I need a permit to remove a chimney?
That depends on how much comes out and whether anything structural changes inside the house. We'll check what applies to your job and look after the permit if one is needed.
How much does chimney removal cost in Winnipeg?
As a ballpark, taking a chimney down below the roofline and closing up the roof is about $1,500 to $4,000. Taking it out all the way through the house starts around $5,000, because of the interior work involved.
